Garages have a way of becoming the default storage spot for everything that doesn’t have a home — old tools, holiday decorations, broken lawn equipment, boxes from the last move. If yours has gotten out of hand, here’s a straightforward way to work through it without it turning into an all-weekend project.
Step 1: Sort into four piles
- Keep — things you actually use, stored properly (not just shoved in a corner).
- Donate — usable items in decent shape that someone else could use.
- Sell — anything worth listing, if you have the time and patience for it.
- Haul away — broken, expired, or genuinely done items. This is usually the biggest pile.
Be honest about the “I’ll fix it someday” pile — if it’s been sitting for over a year, it’s probably a haul-away.
Step 2: Work in zones, not all at once
Trying to empty the whole garage in one go is how these projects stall out. Instead, tackle one wall or one zone at a time — workbench area, sports equipment corner, seasonal storage shelf — so you can actually finish something instead of having every surface covered in a half-sorted mess.
Step 3: Watch for items that need special handling
- Paint cans, oil, and chemicals — these usually can’t just go in the regular trash.
- Old propane tanks — need to be handled separately, never tossed in a regular load.
- Large appliances or a second fridge/freezer — these need proper disposal, not curbside.
- Anything with a motor (mowers, generators) — check for leftover fuel before moving.
Step 4: Decide how the haul-away pile is leaving
Once you’ve got a genuine “gone” pile, you’ve got options: multiple trips to the dump yourself, a rented dumpster if it’s part of a bigger project, or a single same-day pickup where we load everything and haul it away in one visit. For most garage cleanouts, that last option ends up being the fastest and least physically demanding — especially for anything heavy or awkward to move alone.
