Why hot tubs are harder than typical junk
Between the size, weight, and often-awkward placement (a deck, a backyard corner, behind a fence), hot tubs usually require a small crew and the right equipment just to get them out of place — let alone off the property. Add in drained water, old electrical connections, and sometimes a wooden or composite surround, and it’s not a one-person weekend project.
What the process typically looks like
- Drain and disconnect — the tub needs to be fully drained and disconnected from power before removal.
- Break down or move whole — depending on access, some tubs can be moved intact; others need to be broken down in place to get through gates or tight spaces.
- Haul away — the tub, and often the surrounding decking or skirt if it’s being removed too, gets loaded out and hauled off.
What it typically costs
Hot tub removal is priced higher than a typical single item because of the extra labor, equipment, and disposal handling involved — but it’s still far less than most people expect once they realize what DIY removal would actually require (rental equipment, extra people, and a full day, at minimum).
